Try not to count the days. I certainly won’t.
It always begins the same way—quietly, innocently—until suddenly you realise October is standing at the door, smiling like it knows something you don’t.
And somewhere, someone is already thinking about keys.
Not just any keys, of course.
The key.
That delightful time of year when hopeful gentlemen polish their cages, assure themselves “this year will be easy,” and then discover—usually by Day Two—that optimism was perhaps a touch ambitious.
Every year I hear the same confident claim:
“Mistress, thirty-one days won’t be difficult.”
Oh, darling.
You haven’t even reached the first weekend.
Locktober isn’t about suffering, despite the dramatic sighs and heroic retellings that tend to follow. It’s about discipline, patience, trust, and learning that not every impulse deserves immediate attention. In a world where everything is instant, there’s something quietly refreshing about waiting.
And yes… a little frustration never hurts.
The real charm of Locktober isn’t the lock itself.
It’s the mind.
The bargaining.
The negotiations.
The increasingly tentative messages as the month wears on.
“I was just wondering…”
No.
“I thought perhaps…”
Still no.
“What if…”
Absolutely not.
By the third week, something interesting happens. Life continues. Work gets done. Focus improves. Patience settles in. The cage stops being the centre of attention, and self-control quietly takes its place.
Funny how that works.
For first-timers, a simple reminder: preparation always beats bravado. Ensure everything fits properly, maintain good hygiene, communicate clearly, and don’t confuse stubbornness with success. Looking after yourself is never a weakness.
Most importantly, enjoy it.
Locktober isn’t a competition. There are no medals, no podium, no judging panel awarding points for expressive suffering.
There is, however, a quiet satisfaction in keeping a promise—to yourself, or to someone you trust.
So as October approaches, dust off the key…
Or better yet…
Hand it to someone who smiles when you ask for it back.
Happy Locktober.
